On August 30, 2001, an official meeting was convened for the startup of the USI College Republicans. This came after more than 3 years without an organization such as this on the University of Southern Indiana campus. There are reasons these individuals had a vision to start such a venture. It was seen that a man in elected office would do wonderful things in the name of integrity and America. This man was John N. Hostettler, Congressman of Indiana's 8th District. Congressman Hostettler was able to deny Political Action Committee money, deny the Congressional vehicles, and deny anything that increased the sphere of power or influence of the federal government or the taxes of the people. It is something rare in power to see such a man, willing to do this based on Principle. He had integrity in the truest sense and to this day we are very thankful that he took up the calling to serve us as Congressman! Thank you Congressman Hostettler! It was also the willingness of another good man, Jim Banks, to influence the founding of the group. It was his reaching out to someone, who would later become the founder of our organization, that created an understanding and appreciation for the political system of America. This led to the realization that we had to reach out to those in colleges, high schools, middle schools, etc. to teach about the best political system the history of man has ever seen because schools were not doing it. We also noticed that people seemed to take for granted what they had, and it is our mission to show them how our Founding Fathers were willing to stake their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honors" in the name of Liberty. We hope nothing but a snowball effect to occur and for this country to be revitalized with Patriotism in a sense we have never seen. How much resistance exists to the USI College Republicans? The College Democrats did not exist when we founded the USI College Republicans. They formed (late Spring 2002 semester) primarily for the November 2002 election. They currently do not even regularly meet. Our largest resistance comes from the university administration itself. The Student Development Office took 5 months to approve our Constitution and admit us as an official organization. They wanted us to put "chairperson" instead of "chairman" for our different departments and we said we do not do the politically correct thing. Our organization in fact exists to confront that as a political issue! We continually submitted our documentation and had meetings with them until they finally admitted us as an official organization. In fact, being one of the largest organizations on campus we still do not have an office. Sources tell us that many organization that have 3 or 4 attending members have an office and ours having 27 to 30 regularly attending members and merchandise being sold around the U.S. and many materials for the day-to-day business does not. We have had mulitiple meetings with the Student Development Office to finally achieve a closet...which we do not have sole access to. In fact, we cannot even get a key for it. We will continue to fight for what we know is right. |
