2nd Amendment: Information Department Report
by Nick Clark
Reported on [2-7-02]

One of the more treasured aspects of the Republican Party platform is that of the second amendment. Of course, it is understood that the Republican Party is a firm supporter of the United States Constitution and all it says. Yet so many factions and sects of society view the second amendment as something less than par when it comes to the Constitution. For purposes of clarification, let's look at the second amendment as it appears in the Constitution:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

As Americans we have certain basic rights that are doctrinated in the Bill of Rights. The second amendment is one of those rights. Our forefathers saw the issue of protection for all Americans was important. This stemmed from our colonial past with Great Britain, and the monarch's exercise of authoritative control over a freedom loving people. Thomas Jefferson had this to say in regards to gun ownership:

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."

Samuel Adams of Massachusetts had this to say about the second amendment:

"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms."

Patrick Henry had this to say:

"The militia is our ultimate safety. We can have no security without it. The great object is that every man be armed. . . . Every one who is able may have a gun."

Having the right to bear arms or own guns is a right that should not be taken away from Americans or heavily regulated. Case in point: A few weeks ago the media reported of a fatal shooting at a law school in Virginia. The media reported that some by standers overpowered the gunman. The media failed to report that the heroic bystanders overpowered the gunman with their own guns. Out of the 280 stories on this event, only 4 reported the use of firearms to overcome the alleged criminal. Why does the left want to heavily regulate the second amendment and increase federal control over a basic right that we Americans have and enjoy?

I think we need to look at firearms as a tool that man has invented for protection and other palatable forms of revolution as well as a way of deterring an authoritative government from robbing Americans from our freedoms. Therefore, keep in mind that guns do not kill people; people kill people.
