| I-69:
Information Department Report by Nick Clark Reported on [1-17-02] I-69 has been a topic of debate in local and state elections for several decades now. Finally, Indiana’s state assembly is beginning to take action to make I-69 a reality for Hoosiers. Evansville’s state representatives Brian Hasler and Vaneta Becker have sponsored a bill that will allow the state to acquire privately owned land without the bureaucratic regulation. The purpose of this legislation is to help speed I-69’s development once a route has been agreed upon between Evansville and Indianapolis. Bill 1066, which has been passed by the state House of Representatives, would give private landowners an appraisal for their land and allow INDOT (INdiana Department of Transportation) to seize the property rather than wait for a potential court settlement. Landowners can go to court to get a higher amount if they feel the compensation offered by the government does not fairly represent their land. The opposition claims “the bill is too eager to infringe on the rights of property owners.” Representative Kruzan of Bloomington, who opposes the bill, takes a rather conservative position when dealing with issues of eminent domain. Eminent domain is the right of the state or government to claim property in the name of the state. |
