| Secretary
of State Candidate speaks at USI USI Student Newspaper: The Shield by Jami Maday [02-07-02] Vol. 31 Issue 19 Former NBA star and IU Hall of Famer Kent Benson spoke Monday night to USI students about his candidacy for Secretary of State and the improvements that need to be made for Indiana. His invitation was sponsored by USI's College Republicans. Benson spoke of both his college and basketball careers and how his strive for excellence helped him improve others and guided him to run for political office. He also stressed the importance of teamwork inside the capital building as well as inside the locker room. "We need to restore excellence to our government," said Benson. Benson explained his various affiliations throughout the years in Indiana and how it qualifies him to run for Secretary of State. He also informed USI students that their teamwork and leadership were also important to Indiana's future government. Due to his involvement in the pursuit of excellence within the state government, Benson was made president of the Hoosier Project in 2001. "It doesn't matter to me about those other candidates," said Benson. "It's all about me being the best that I can be, and using that to give back to the people in the state of Indiana." Benson was involved in various public appearances, professional organizations, business organizations, and charitable events. Since his retirement from professional basketball, Benson helped raise money for different organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, the Leukemia Society and more. Benson helped raise contributions that estimated over $1 million. Aside from public affiliations, Benson said that playing college and professional basketball helped him to obtain the teamwork and leadership skills he needed to represent Indiana politically. "I've been blessed with a lot of talents and abilities and I feel that now is the time in my life that I can give back to the people of Indiana who so willingly gave me their support through my high school, college, and professional career." Benson was three-time All-American at IU and was the Most Valuable Player in 1976 when the Hoosiers won the NCAA Championship. He also became the FCA College Athlete of the Year. Benson was inducted in the IU Hall of Fame in 1999. Two years later, he was named IU Basketball All-Century Team. After Benson graduated from IU, he was the No. 1 draft pick for the Milwaukee Bucks. He was traded to different NBA teams during his 12-year professional career, spending one year playing in Italy. |
