College Republicans respond to Cheney's cost USI Student Newspaper: The Shield by Jami Maday [02-14-02] Vol. 31 Issue 20 Evansville residents may have to pay up to $50,000 for Vice President Dick Cheney's visit, said Mayor Russ Lloyd, Jr. Cheney's visit helped raise more than $125,000 for Republican 8th District Representative John Hostettler for his campaign to run for Congress. Democratic County Chairman/Evansville City Councilman Steve Melcher wants Hostettler to pay. USI's College Republican leaders are aware of Melcher's proposal, but they believe that the city of Evansville should provide for Cheney's visit and security. "The cost seems inflated and it is fishy that Steve Melcher is proposing that about Rep. Hostettler," said Sean Selby, Executive Chairman of USI's College Republicans. Some of the government's costs for Cheney's visit will be covered by Hostettler's campaign. However, questions arose when Vice President Al Gore visited Evansville for Democrat Congressman Frank McCloskey in 1994. Costs of Cheney's visit included his heavy security and payment to off-duty police officers. "I believe that whatever the cost, it was well worth it," said External Vice-Chairman Ethan Carrel. "It benefited the people of Evansville. I don't think that the cost is so great that the people of Evansville cannot pay for it." |
